Our Story

Weipa Dirt Karts is the first and currently the only club in Queensland affiliated with the Australian Independent Dirt Kart Association (AIDKA), now known as Dirt Karting of Australia (DKA).

What started as a handful of locals cutting laps has grown into a strong, well run club deeply rooted in the remote mining community of Weipa at the top of Cape York. Today we have around 65 members, and on a typical club night we regularly see 30 to 40 nominations, with equipment and standards on par with clubs anywhere in Australia.

As a small remote club, we have consistently innovated to build strong public and community engagement. Our twilight race meetings draw big crowds and we have become known for creating a genuine spectator event. In 2013, our blue ribbon titles attracted an estimated 1,500 people in one day, which was the largest crowd ever recorded at a dirt kart meeting in Australia at the time. Even our normal big club days can attract up to 300 spectators. This is something truly unique to Weipa and the local support is a critical part of sustaining the club. We also run themed food nights, sunset markets and other social activities that make race day a great outing for the whole community.

We are proud to have earned strong support from local Weipa businesses and communities  as we have grown dirt karting in the region and strengthened our standing as an active member of Dirt Karting of Australia. Our goal is simple. We provide a clear pathway for local drivers to race and develop in motorsport, while always putting safety, inclusion and community first. We work hard to create a welcoming, family focused environment where kids, women and newcomers feel comfortable to compete and belong. That is what we mean by our charter. You do not just buy a kart, you buy a family.

Weipa also has a proud history of hosting major events. In 2013 we ran the first Queensland Dirt Kart Title at our original facility and welcomed interstate competitors for a recognised blue ribbon meeting. In 2015 Queensland hosted its first official State Dirt Kart Title with 84 nominations and strong interstate participation, an outstanding effort for a small regional club. In 2017 Weipa delivered another successful title event under the national association, supported by around 500 spectators across the weekend and widely praised as one of the best run meetings in the sport. In 2025 we hosted the Far North Queensland Titles with similar spectator numbers to 2017 along with interstate competitors.

Today we are focused on growing dirt karting in the Far North by getting more families and individuals involved. We now offer turnkey kart and safety gear hire so you can race casually and see if the sport is for you. We also run practice days most months where prospective members can try one of our dedicated practice karts, and new members can learn the basics through driver and pit crew education.

No one goes it alone at Weipa Dirt Karts. If you are new, we will support you all the way.
